BC Seniors Games

              2010 BC Seniors Games will be held September 15-18 in Comox Valley

INTRODUCTION

The BC Seniors Games Society was organized in 1987 by the Government of British Columbia, Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Recreation and Culture. The mandate of the Society is to promote active participation in sport and recreation for BC resident seniors, in both active and passive events.

 THE GAMES

The BC Seniors Games are held in late summer.  The location of the BC Seniors Games changes every year.  The Province is divided into 12 Zones.  Each Zone organizes local playoffs.  Expenses are borne by participants although the Zones can subsidize these through fundraising and corporate sponsorship.

 MISSION

 • Promote active participation by seniors in sports, recreation, fitness, culture and self-education

• Demonstrate the values and abilities of seniors and create an awareness of their contributions to Canadian lifestyles

• Encourage physical, social and creative achievement through participation and  friendly competition

• Engender a sense of community spirit by providing the opportunity and catalyst for bringing seniors, their families and the community at large together

 THE LEGION- BC/YUKON COMMAND

Many Legionnaires are active participants in the BC Seniors Games. In addition the Legion contributes both financially and through volunteerism in support of the Games. Colour Parties, Pipes and Drum Bands often participate in the traditional and ceremonial aspects of the Games. As well Legion Branches and Ladies Auxiliaries raise funds and volunteer their time and expertise to enhance the traditional standard of excellence of the BC Seniors Games.
