When life threatening illnesses strike children, the quest for small comforts becomes a prominent force for all those touched by the child's life. The Spinoza Bear Program was introduced to provide this type of small comfort for children between the ages of three to ten, suffering from illness or tragic circumstance.
A Spinoza Bear is a large, talking, therapeutic bear which provides comfort, companionship and entertainment for children in distress. Spinoza comes with a set of six themed cassette tapes, along with a carrying pack and a Poppy Bear Puppet. The cassettes can be designed to include songs, the voice of a loved one telling stories and whatever messages are relevant to the child, in offering comfort and enjoyment.
The Legion Foundation administers the Spinoza Bear Program for British Columbia and the Yukon. Donations from the public and corporate sponsorships are welcomed in support of the program.
Legion Branches throughout the Command accept requests for Spinoza Bears, accompanied by endorsement from a health professional and of course the parents or caregiver.
