INTRODUCTION
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Young Canadians Challenge is an exciting self-development program available to all young people, equipping them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and their country. There are currently 30,000 young Canadians between the ages of 14-15 participating in the Award. Within BC/Yukon there are presently 7,350 participants.
Congratulations to the 720 Bronze, Silver and Gold Awardees for 2007, the most Awards earned in any year!
Each standard provides for training, achievement and recognition in the basics of good citizenship. A wide variety of interests are embraced including, physical activities, educational training, self-discipline and service to the community..all designed to advance the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of young people.
There are four major components of the award program, encouraging young people to realize their full potential.
Community Service - a chance to prepare for and provide voluntary service to others in the community
Skills Development- discover and develop personal interests, social and practical skills
Expeditions – undertake without motorized assistance a challenging journey of discovery and adventure
Physical Recreation – improve physical fitness through active participation
