Members of the Ladies Auxiliary throughout the BC/Yukon Command are busy knitting hats for babies and children in Afghanistan, referred to as "Boomer Hats".
"Boomer" is the nickname of a young soldier named, Corporal Andrew Eykelenboom, 1st Field Ambulance, who sacrificed his life serving in the cause of peace in Afghanistan. Prior to his passing, he urged his mother, Mrs. Maureen Eykelenboom to knit hats for disadvantaged children. As Boomer and his comrades went from village to village, they would give the hats to children they encountered on their various missions.
It was Mrs. Eykelenboom's wish to continue this humanitarian gesture in honour of her son's service and sacrifice. Unknown to Mrs. Eykelenboom, Branch #160 Ladies Auxiliary took up the cause with the assistance of many Ladies Auxiliaries throughout the Command, and have since knitted 4,500 Boomer Hats for children in Afghanistan.
Mrs. Eykelenboom is the Silver Cross Mother of Legion Branch #160 in Comox.
